The Raccoon is originally native to North America and at present there are 26 different types of raccoons living across the North American continent, ranging from Canada to Panama. However, while the raccoon may have been native to North America it has since spread across the world. Raccoon populations have been recorded existing throughout countries in Europe (the largest abundance being located in Germany) as well as around the western end of Russia and parts of China and Japan.
Many North American Indian tribes have long-viewed the raccoon as a trickster. The mischievous raccoon is most frequently portrayed light-heartedly as a leading character in children’s tales. The spirit animal is also the inspiration for many Native American dances and is recognized, in part, in rituals and ceremonies.
